Acute hemorrhagic paraplegia in a thoracic spinal hemangioblastoma after free diving

Prashanth J. Rao, Kevin Phan, Jonathon Ball

Abstract

Hemangioblastomas are well described vascular tumors that cause gradual-onset neurological problems from edema, syrinx formation and rarely, acute hemorrhage. There are three cases in literature (1-3) with acute hemorrhage-related neurological presentation but none are related to diving. We present a rare case of acute hemorrhagic paraplegia in a thoracic spinal hemangioblastoma following free breath-hold diving.
